Last weekend, Saints Netballer Caitlin Evans completed her first session as part of Netball Scotland’s Performance League.

In her first year of study at St Andrews, Caitlin joined the club at the beginning of this academic year and has been a key player for the 1st team, playing at GS and GA. Achieving a place on "Team Grainger" within this league gives her a brilliant opportunity to play with and against girls from leading Scottish clubs and from the National Scottish squads while being coached by Sharyn Lyon, Lead Coach of the Glasgow South Saltires.

Last weekend was Caitlin’s first training session and match which she described as “really intense and fast paced, but so much fun”. Looking forward to the next session, she described the techniques used in these sessions to help her and other players alike: "I think the feedback will be really useful in improving my play. During the match we received tips from our coach like we would normally get, but we are also receiving individual feedback and shooting stats from our coach via email which I think will be really useful”.

Heather Gaunt, University of St Andrews Director of Netball said of Caitlin’s selection; “this is an incredible achievement for Caitlin. Everyone at Saints Netball is incredibly proud of her for getting selected to represent Team Grainger. Caitlin is a key member of our 1st team squad and has settled in to life as a Saints Netballer with ease. Training and competing in the Performance League will give her some more things to think about as she looks to enhance her game so it’s a really exciting opportunity. Hopefully Caitlin is the first of many Saints Netballers selected to play in the Performance League”.

Launched in 2016, the Performance League is part of an initiative by Netball Scotland to become a top 8 INF country by 2019. It aims to link talented young players with experienced players and coaches. It therefore gives the opportunity for squad girls to perform at an extremely high level, with access to a coaching programme run by some of Scotland’s leading coaches.

After trials four teams were formed, named after Scottish sporting heroes such as Andy Murray, Chris Hoy, Katharine Grainger and Hannah Miley. Each team is supported by Coach and Management teams and mentored by Scotland’s Leading Coaches, Gail Parata and Lesley MacDonald. They will train and compete against each other throughout March and April, culminating in the league final on the 23rd April.
